Learning analytics is an emerging field in which sophisticated analytic tools are used to improve learning and education. It draws from, and is closely tied to, a series of other fields of study including business intelligence, web analytics, academic analytics, educational data mining, and action analytics. by T. Elias This is one of the best and most concise definitions of learning analytics.



Impact
Learning Analytics and Big Data are here to stay.  So much information is collected about individual, groups to study just about anything so it has a huge importance and relevance to making decisions on budgets, teaching and learning methods and almost every decision in education and professions. Because this information is so vital to continued decision-making, its impact will only grow.  We have become an information and date rich world. Its impact reaches to everyday decisions such as grocery shopping and our shopping preferences to more important decision such as government and business.


Keep Up
Keeping up with this educational trend will be a challenge because there is so much data which also is constantly being updated.  One way is to continue with the trends of data by following research institutes like the Pew Research.  Also, I can keep in touch with administrators who may have more access to data and decisions regarding education and training.

5 ways learning analytics can make your training more effective 

I chose this video because it helps the viewer understand the relevance and application of learning analytics and data to effective training methods.

Activity
An activity could consist of having students research a trend related to their inquiry topic for example global warming and have them write a proposal which describes the trend based on the analytics and then have them create a solution.  The proposal would involve describing the problem, the plan, the budget, the timeframe, qualifications all using the data gleaned from the analytics.  

Another possible aspect of this project could be having students create their own survey about a topic and have them analyze the data and create their own conclusions and solutions.
