3D Printing
3D printing is the process of creating an actual object from a "copy " machine. Overall, I can see the huge value of 3D printing. 3D printing is used for creating various items such as body parts. This is truly fascinating to think that people with health issues can be relieved of pain and stress. 3D priting can often be understood by thinking of it as a set of blueprints . That image can be very helpful in understanding the concepts of 3D printing.
Impact
This was an educational trend that was a bit difficult for me to fully see its impact on education and learning. I could see it being a bit more of a novelty or unique feature of learning as opposed to a consistent regular feature. Students could use 3D printing in first year writing inquiry projects and technical communication students could use it in instructions and proposal projects.Students can use aspects of their inquiry topics to create in 3D for greater emphasis and communicate to a deeper level. I would keep in mind the three educational principles 1) students/client touch hold objects, 2) bring student creations to life, 3) better understand the creation process. I want to focus on the third point of students understanding the creation process. Points that first year writing stresses is the writing process, research and inquiry asking questions. Understanding and being able to articulate the process of creating a 3d object could help students in articulating the process of writing their projects. This exercise could provide the mental gymnastics and stretching required for critical thinking and creativity.
I could also see it being used more for professions and training for practice in developing a skill by using something that was produced by3D printing or even practicing the skill of creating an object (although once programmed I believe the machine does most of the work).
Keep Up
I could keep up with this trend by contacting businesses and hospitals/medical fields that use 3D printing and refer to them often for updates on the technology. I can also produce my own 3D printing items to get personal hands on experience.

This is a video sponsored by National Geographic about a challenge to create a 3D printed object. I chose this video because National Geographic produces high quality reliable information and material.
Activity
An activity with this educational trend would be writing instructions on how to create something using this technology. This activity could be used in either a classroom or a business. Usability testing could be part of the activity as well since companies rely heavily on making sure their products and instructions/explanations are accurate and geared for the correct audience. u
